On Sunday, December 21, 2008, a Bellevue ice rink tent collapsed due to the weight of accumulated snow. The incident happened around 10 p.m. At least ten people were trapped by the collapsed tent. Initially no major injuries were reported, but now there are reports that a girl was injured in the incident. The girl’s age and name were not released however.
The girl and her parents may have a claim for negligence against the owners of the ice rink. To prove negligence, you must show that the owners failed to exercise ordinary care in some way. Given the huge amounts of snow, the owners likely should have taken precautions against the tent collapsing. This is true especially if the tent was not secured in some way, or not capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of pounds of accumulated snow.
