Driving While Sick Just as Dangerous as DUI

A new study shows that driving while you are sick can be just as dangerous as driving drunk. Two British insurance companies come out with the study claiming that driving with a cold can be equally dangerous as taking four double shots of whiskey.

According to the study, drivers who are sick have a slow reaction time, have problems with curves and sudden braking, according to the study.

Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said that people focus more on their sickness than driving. A driver was recently pulled over while he was grabbing for his tissues and swerved, causing him to be pulled over.

“You should be evaluating yourself,” Leary said. “Can I drive safely while I’m feeling as ill as I am?”

Leary also said drivers should be especially careful if they’re taking cold medicine that causes drowsiness.

There is no law against driving while sick. However, for the sake of yourself and those around, take a deep breath and pause before starting your car. Never drive if you do not think you can do so safely and responsibly. Far too many motorists are over-confident in their driving skills when they are in no condition to be driving at all.
